Carbon Disclosure Project Submission for Major Telecoms Provider
Global Crossing is a major international supplier of voice, video and data telecommunications. The organisation is among the 2000+ large organisations that voluntarily respond to the annual Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the World’s largest database of corporate climate change information.
For a company with over 400 UK sites the calculation of a carbon footprint is no small task. The challenge is to convert a vast amount of data from multiple sources into a carbon footprint that both stands up to the scrutiny of PriceWaterhouse Cooper’s auditors, and also provides the information necessary to direct in-house carbon reduction initiatives.
Burton Environmental’s approach follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, a widely recognised standard for GHG reporting. First the organisational and operational scope is defined, then guidance is developed to ensure the data collection stage progresses smoothly. Techniques are employed to convert energy, fuel and other data into carbon emissions. All emissions conversion factors, assumptions and uncertainties are declared, ensuring the methodology is transparent. The result was a carbon footprint encompassing electricity, gas, fuel oil, travel and refrigerant use across 400 sites.
The results of all participating organisations are publically available at
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) gathers information on behalf of public procurement organisations and 475 institutional investors controlling $55 trillion of assets.
